On The United Way:
Volunteers Show
They Care With Day
At Aquarium

For five years, having the young children who attend the Lafayette Square Day Care Center participate in the university's United Way campaign has become something of a tradition. Most notably, their sunny faces greet staff and faculty who come to the yearly kick-off event at Shriver Hall.

But there was something a little fishy about how early they became involved with the campaign this year as more than a dozen Hopkins volunteers--including vice president of Human Resources Audrey Smith (right)--escorted a group of 2-to-5-year-olds from the day care center to The Baltimore Aquarium for Homewood's annual Day of Caring activity.

"We just wanted to give something back to these children who do so much to get our United Way campaign off to such a bright start," says Judy Peregoff, director of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs and the university's United Way administrator.

And the children had a wonderful time. So much so, it seems, that School of Engineering's Charlotte Friedman found herself supporting one little girl who fell fast asleep on her shoulder on the bus ride back to the center. No doubt she was resting up for the kick off, set for Sept. 24.
