Hopkins Helps In Alleviating Regional Blood Shortage

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Responding to the Red Cross' call for help, the Hopkins community recently surpassed its summer blood-drive goals on both the East Baltimore and Homewood campuses. A total of 522 units of blood was collected.

The summer months and holidays are critical times of the year for the American Red Cross, whose blood supply regularly falls to dangerously low levels. Last year, 28,000 pints of blood were imported from other countries to meet this area's needs.

Janet Palmer of Homewood Research Administration has donated nearly two gallons of blood over the years. "Because my rare blood type is in such high demand, I try to donate on a regular basis," she said. "It takes so little time and effort to help such a great deal."

The next drives will be at JHMI on Sept. 8 and 9 and at Homewood on Sept. 16 and 17. To donate blood or volunteer your time, call Wanda Cartwright, chair of the East Baltimore campus blood drive, at 410-614-3050; or Daria Bollinger, chair of the Homewood drive, at 410-516-0138.
