Children's Center Foundation Play Area Dedicated to Benjamin Carson

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

The Children's Cancer Foundation Play Area, on the fifth floor of the Outpatient Center, was dedicated on Aug. 27 in honor of Benjamin S. Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery. The play area is the gift and creation of Shirley Howard, president of the foundation, founded in 1985.

At the dedication of the new Children's Cancer Foundation Play Area are, seated, benefactor Shirley Howard and honoree Benjamin Carson; and, standing, Don Long, director of the Department of Neurosurgery; George Dover, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics; and Ronald Peterson, president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Howard and her late husband, Bill Howard, helped found the Children's Cancer Foundation in 1983 and were instrumental in developing the now-annual telethon. Over the years, the foundation has contributed more than $1 million annually to the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and other medical centers to fund pediatric cancer research and treatment.
