Striking Mexican Union Rep to Speak at Homewood

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Jaime Garcia Barron, a leader in the struggle of Mexico's export assembly workers to organize an independent union, will be speaking Friday night, Oct. 2, on the Homewood campus.

Barron is a member of the October 6 Union at the Han Young auto factory in Tijuana, where workers weld chassis for tractor trailers sold through Hyundai Precision America. The union, which represents the majority of workers at Han Young, has been on strike for recognition since May 22.

Alicia Schmidt-Camacho, a volunteer for the Support Committee for the Maquiladore Workers in San Diego; Trim Bissell, national coordinator for the Campaign for Labor Rights; and Barron are participating in a tour of the East Coast, which will raise funds for the striking Han Young workers.

This event will take place at 7 p.m. in 301 Shaffer Hall. Free and open to the public, the talk is sponsored by the Industrial Workers of the World and the JHU Student Labor Action Committee.
