     Once each month, Cheers recognizes achievement of
consequence among faculty, staff and students, as well as some
promotions and new hires.
     We welcome contributions submitted in writing accompanied by
a telephone number. Submissions may be edited for length, clarity

Honors, awards             
and appointments

Homewood 
Student Affairs

     Ralph Johnson, assistant to the dean of Homewood Student
Affairs and director of Multicultural Student Affairs, was
recently installed as the 46th president of the Southern
Association for College Student Affairs at its annual conference
last month. Johnson has served SACSA since 1982 in a variety of
capacities including chair of several committees, executive
council member at large and president-elect. His term as
president expires in November of 1996. Also at the conference,
Johnson was awarded a mini-research incentive grant to study
factors in the academic success of African American college
males.

     Blue Jays quarterback Dan Redziniak was named the Division
III Burger King Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week ending
Nov. 18. Redziniak, one of four college football players honored,
was selected for his outstanding accomplishments both on and off
the football field. The university will receive a check for
$25,000 in Redziniak's name from Burger King to go to the
university's general scholarship fund.


Medicine

     Marvin Schuster, professor of medicine and chief of the
Division of Digestive Diseases at the Bayview Medical Center, has
been elected president of the American College of
Gastroenterology.

Changing places,       
new faces

      The Applied Physics Laboratory has appointed Ruth Nimmo as
head of its Business and Information Services Department,
effective Oct. 30. Nimmo will oversee accounting, budget,
computing, purchasing and subcontract operations.

     Ann Stevens has been appointed director of administration in
the School of Continuing Studies, Division of Business
Management. She will be responsible for planning and managing
budgets, developing and implementing computer support systems,
and overseeing admissions and enrollment management.
