and appointments

Arts and Sciences

Hispanic and Italian studies professor Pier Massimo Forni's Adventures in Speech: Rhetoric and Narration in Boccaccio's "Decameron" has been selected by CHOICE, the journal of the Association of College and Research Libraries, as one of the outstanding books of 1996.

History professor John Russell-Wood was presented with the insignia of Comendador of the Order of Prince Henry by the Republic of Portugal in recognition of his scholarly contributions to the history of Portugal and its overseas empire. Russell-Wood is chairman of the History Department and acting chairman of Hispanic and Italian Studies.

Continuing Studies

Sheldon Greenberg, director of the Police Executive Leadership Program, received a Superintendent's Salute from the Maryland State Police this fall for helping to establish the Maryland Community Policing Consortium. In addition, he accepted a Governor's Award for serving on the board of visitors for the Maryland School for the Deaf during the past 12 years, and was recognized by the American Red Cross, Central Maryland chapter, for his work on the board of directors for the Pheresis Program.

Michael Rosenberg, professor and chairman of the Department of Special Education in the Division of Education, has been elected to a one-year term as chairman of the Maryland State Special Education Advisory Committee.

Homewood Student Affairs

The water polo team captured its third consecutive Division III Eastern Championship in October, defeating Washington and Lee in the title game at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King's Point, N.Y. Freshman drive Chris Cha was named Tournament MVP. Senior 2-meter man Bob Ghassemleh and sophomore goalkeeper Alec Peterson were named to the all-tournament first team, while Hopkins head coach Ted Bresnahan was selected as the All-Tournament coach.

Weslie Worman, assistant director of the Office of Volunteer Services, is currently serving as president of the National Tutoring Association, an organization with representatives from 42 states representing both two-year and four-year institutions.

Medicine

Professor of psychiatry Raymond DePaulo was one of three co-winners of the 1996 Selo Prize for Depression Research from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression. The three scientists internally replicated each other's findings of the first substantiated vulnerability factor in bipolar disorder on chromosome 18, opening the way for more therapeutic interventions.

The American Medical Women's Association has awarded Melissa Merideth, a fourth-year medical student in the MD/MPH program, the first Wilhelm-Frankowski Medical Education Scholarship of $4,000.

Cardiology fellow Daniel Pauly received a second place award and $500 prize for his presentation designed to develop gene therapy strategies to treat heart failure at the Astra-Merck Cardiovascular Young Investigators' Symposium.

Dean emeritus Richard Ross has been named an honorary fellow of the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospitals in London.

Changing places,
new faces

Wilma Bias has been appointed professor emerita of medicine in the School of Medicine.

Max Corden, professor of international economics, has been named the first incumbent of the Ju Yung Chung Distinguished Professorship of International Business and Economics at the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.

Kevin Donohue has been appointed underwriting sales manager and director of development at WJHU-FM.

Robert Forster has been appointed professor emeritus in the Department of History in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Harold Fox has been appointed the Dorothy Edwards Professor in Gynecology and Obstetrics and director of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in the School of Medicine, and chairman of gynecology/obstetrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Alex Haller Jr. has been appointed professor emeritus of pediatric surgery, pediatrics and emergency medicine in the School of Medicine.

Ronald Hudson has been appointed director of information technology services in the School of Continuing Studies.

Robert Jeffs has been appointed professor emeritus of urology and pediatrics in the School of Medicine.

Brian Judd has been appointed professor emeritus in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Langford Kidd has been appointed professor emeritus of pediatrics in the School of Medicine.

Fray Marshall, professor of urology and oncology, has been named the first incumbent of the Bernard L. Schwartz Distinguished Professorship in Urological Oncology in the School of Medicine.

Professor of international economics Charles Pearson, in the Nitze School of Ad-vanced International Studies, was appointed to the AGIP Professorship in International Economics for academic year 1996-97.

Robert Tranquillo has been appointed professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering in the Whiting School of Engineering.

Janet Schumann has been appointed major gifts officer for the Johns Hopkins School of Continuing Studies Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

Gardner Smith has been appointed emeritus professor of surgery in the School of Medicine.
