Student Flu Shots -- Students who feel they are in the high-risk category for influenza (individuals with lung disease, heart disease, severe asthma, diabetes or other chronic illnesses), or who simply wish to reduce the risk of acquiring flu, may call the Student Health and Wellness Center at 410-516-8270 to schedule an appointment to receive the 1998-99 influenza virus vaccine. There will be a $5 charge for the vaccine.

Open House on the Web -- The School of Public Health is offering the Hopkins community an opportunity to visit its Web site, http://www.jhsph.edu, through Nov. 25, in an event offered solely through the Internet. The Web pages will offer information about the school, descriptions of the departments and of degree, non-degree and certificate programs, and the option to pursue courses via the Internet through the distance education division. Visitors to the pages will find information about faculty and their research and publications, research projects at the school's centers and institutes, and lectures and symposia.

Travel Fellowships -- The Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies is accepting applications for two travel fellowships of $2,500 each, reserved for Hopkins graduate students in the humanities who need to be in Italy for their research. The funds are intended to cover round-trip airfare and travel within Italy, and will be awarded to two graduate students chosen among those who have submitted a CV, a description of their project and a letter of support by a Hopkins faculty member familiar with their work. Applicants should demonstrate that the successful completion of their projects will require the use of Italian literary sources.

Applications should be submitted to the Charles S. Singleton Travel Graduate Fellowship Program, Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies, The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD 21218. Applications must reach the department on or before Monday, Nov. 30.

Student Funding Programs -- Two programs are available through the Alumni Association. The Community Service Grant Program was established to support valuable volunteer experiences for students and to foster good relationships between the university and the surrounding community. The program supports students who create their own volunteer community service projects or design their own ventures within existing volunteer organizations.

The Student Services Funding Program promotes the student experience at John Hopkins by providing funding to student groups or programs, and to support campus events, activities and programs that benefit and involve students from all university divisions.

Both programs are open to undergraduate and graduate students from all divisions of the university. Applications are available at divisional alumni relations offices, the Homewood Office of Volunteer Services in Levering Hall or at the Steinwald Alumni House, 3211 N. Charles St. Applications for spring 1999 funding are due Dec. 1. Applications for summer and fall 1999 funding are due April 15, 1999.

"Shop Around the Museums" -- This event will be the first to bring together Baltimore-area museum shops in one location. Fourteen museum shops will be represented: the American Visionary Arts Museum, the Babe Ruth Museum, the Baltimore Maritime Museum, the Baltimore Zoo, the B&O Railroad Museum, Calvert Marine Museum, Evergreen House, Hampton Mansion, Homewood House Museum, the Maryland Historical Society, the Montgomery County Historical Society, the National Aquarium, St. Mary's City Commission and the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.

Shoppers can select from the full inventories of the museum shops. A preview party begins the event on Friday, Dec. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. Members of participating museums are invited for refreshments and a 10 percent discount on purchases (with a museum membership I.D. card). Admission to the preview party is $10.

The Museums Shop-Around will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 6. Admission is $5 for adults, with children 12 and under admitted free. Re-freshments and free parking will be available. For more information, call 410-516-0341.

Healthy Holiday Tips -- Faculty and staff are invited to a "Lunch and Learn" program, where a social worker and a dietitian will discuss ways to make the holidays healthier. Ellen Walderman will discuss "Avoiding Holiday Stress," and Sue James will talk about "Healthy Eating for the Holidays," on Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., in the Sherwood Room in Levering Hall on the Homewood campus.

Participants can bring their lunch; dessert and beverages will be provided. There will be door prizes and a raffle for a free massage. The event is sponsored by Occupational Health Services and Benefits Administration. To register, call 410-516-0450.

"Holiday Traditions in Old Baltimore" -- Tour Baltimore's most prestigious historic house museums dressed up for the season on Sunday, Dec. 13, from noon to 5 p.m.

Continuous bus service, will stop at the Homewood House Museum and Evergreen House, as well as the Mount Clare Museum House and the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House. Each house will offer period music and entertainment, and refreshments provided by local restaurants and caterers, as well as holiday shopping.

Tickets are $8 for members of participating museums, $10 for non-members and $8 for children. Group tickets are available for groups of 20 or more at $10 per person.
