Obituary:
Honorary Chair of SAIS Reischauer Center Dies at 83

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Haru Matsukata Reischauer, the honorary chair of the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at SAIS, died on Sept. 23 in La Jolla, Calif. She was 83.

The wife of the late Professor Edwin O. Reischauer, U.S. ambassador to Japan from 1961 to 1966, Haru Matsukata Reischauer was, like her husband, a strong supporter of the United States-Japan relationship.

Her visits to SAIS included a celebration, in April 1986, in honor of her published work, Samurai and Silk, a biography of her grandfathers.

In 1990, Professor Reischauer died, and his widow succeeded him as honorary chair of the Reischauer Center.

A tribute to Haru Matsukata Reischauer will be held in Washington on Nov. 11, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Kenney Auditorium, Nitze Building. For further information, call the center at 202-663-5815.
