Top Cops Hit the Books

Do a keyword search on "police" and a search engine like Alta Vista will return 200,000 hits. We tried to narrow it down a bit by looking up community policing. The first site we found was from the U.S. Department of Justice: the home page of its COPS Program--Community Oriented Policing Services. The site explains the DOJ program to put 100,000 officers on U.S. city streets. If you follow one of its links to another police site, you first get a warning that the Justice Department will not be held responsible for anything you find. We rest easier knowing that.

The Baltimore County Police Department maintains its own site. Much of the information will be of interest only to those who live in the county, but it gives you an idea of the emphasis community policing places on sharing information with the public. You can also listen to a clip from the Baltimore County PD's band, The Heat. Nice beat, you can dance to it, we give it an 85.

An excellent archive of articles on community policing may be found at the National Center for Community Policing page.
