"Snared by the Web"
Author's Notebook
By Joanne Cavanaugh

Most of my thoughts about this story are, in fact, incorporated into the piece. As a writer, I can't help but adore much about the Internet and all it offers, especially in the realm of research. As a social human being, I can't avoid worrying about the effects of an electronic middleman on our already alienated, overtrivialized culture.

But, you know, there it is. And like all other technological changes in this past century, humankind has adapted and taken advantage of the new. And students are in the superb position of doing just that. Is it scary? Many sci fi books written over the past few decades predicted a communally wired society by the next millenium -- one that would, at the minimum, incorporate "high technology" into our basic personalities. Well, we are in that future and it will be interesting to see whether the Internet remains a cacophony of democracy or assumes another--less entertaining -- role in our culture.
