The Vega String Quartet Performs at Evergreen

The Evergreen Carriage House Concert Series will close its 2000-2001season with a performance by the Vega String Quartet at 8 p.m., Friday, April 27, at the Evergreen Carriage House, 4545 N. Charles Street in Baltimore. The program will include works by Franz Joseph Haydn, Igor Stravinsky and Claude Debussy.

The members of Vega String Quartet -- Wendy Yun Chen, violin I, Jessica Shuang Wu, violin II, Yinzi Kong, viola, and Guang Wang, cello -- have performed together since they met in 1986 while studying at Shanghai Conservatory. They first attracted international attention in 1987 as prize- winners at the Prague Spring International Competition. In 1991, they were invited to participate in the Paris International Music Festival and won a young artists' prize at the 40th ARD International Music Competition in Munich. After pursuing separate educational directions, the members reunited in 1996 at the Harid Conservatory in the United States as the Harid String Quartet. As Harid String Quartet, the foursome won first prize at the National Society of Arts and Letters String Quartet Competition, followed by first prize at the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition and at the Carmel Chamber Music Competition in California. In 1999, the quartet won four of the six prizes awarded at the Bordeaux (formerly Evian) International String Quartet Competition in France. In February 2000, the group took the name, Vega String Quartet. The Evergreen Carriage House Concert Series is sponsored by the Evergreen House Foundation in honor of its founder, Alice Warder Garrett. Garrett, who lived at Evergreen House from 1920 to 1952, was a patron of the arts who supported a resident string quartet each spring and fall from 1928 to 1942. The quartet performed for the many guests the Garretts invited to their homes at Evergreen and in Italy.

Admission to the concert is $15 per person and includes a reception after the performance to meet the artists. Evergreen Fellows, Contributors and Patrons are admitted free with one guest. To make reservations or more information, call 410-516-0341.
