This is a listing of the largest individual gifts and pledges ever made to The Johns Hopkins University and/or to The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, along with the year in which each was announced. An asterisk (*) indicates the gift counts toward the current "Johns Hopkins Campaign: Knowledge for the World."

1. * $150 million -- Sidney Kimmel to the university and the hospital for cancer research and patient care at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, 2001

2. $100 million -- Michael R. Bloomberg. An initial commitment of $55 million to the university for all of the academic divisions, athletics, and the Milton S. Eisenhower Library, and to the hospital and the university's School of Medicine for the cancer buildings initiative, 1995. A second commitment, completing the gift, of $45 million to the university to complete the gift, for undergraduate financial aid, the Sheridan Libraries, Johns Hopkins Medicine, the School of Continuing Studies and other purposes, 1998
(Mr. Bloomberg is a 1964 graduate of the Whiting School of Engineering and has been chair of the university's board of trustees since 1996.)

2. * $100 million -- An anonymous donor to the university to establish the Johns Hopkins Malaria Institute at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and fund a 10-year effort to rid the world of malaria by developing a new vaccine and drugs, 2001

4. * $58.5 million -- An anonymous donor to the university to establish the Institute for Cell Engineering in the School of Medicine, 2001. Part of a larger planned commitment by the donor to the Johns Hopkins Institutions, details of which are to be announced at a later time.

5. $50 million -- The Zanvyl and Isabelle Krieger Fund to the university for the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences endowment, 1992
(Mr. Krieger was a 1928 graduate of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.)

6. $30 million -- An anonymous donor to the university for the School of Medicine to create the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences; initial commitment in 1996 ($15 million) completed with another (*) $15 million in 2000

7. * $23.5 million -- Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the university for School of Public Health research to find the precise combination of vitamins and other micronutrients that can most effectively save lives and prevent illness among impoverished mothers and children in the developing world, 2000.

8. * $21.4 million -- Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the university to support School of Public Health research on measles vaccine, 2000

9. $20 million -- R. Champlin and Debbie Sheridan to the university for the Milton S. Eisenhower Library, 1994
(Mr. Sheridan is a 1952 graduate of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and at the time of the gift was a trustee of the university. He is now a trustee emeritus.)

9. $20 million -- Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to the hospital for the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Building (cancer center), 1995
(This is the largest single gift ever received by The Johns Hopkins Hospital.)

9. $20 million -- Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations to the university to create the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the School of Public Health, 1999
