Buccicone Named JHU Student Employee of the Year

Oliver Buccicone, a senior from Rochester, Minn., has been named The Johns Hopkins University's student employee of the year for his work at the Ralph S. O'Connor Recreation Center on the university's Homewood campus.

An electrical engineering major, Buccicone is known both for his handiness and people skills. A jack of all trades in the recreation center, he is a building manager, fitness and weight room supervisor, maintenance technician and emergency supervisor known for his dedication, even on snow days. Much of his time is spent overseeing the work of his fellow student workers.

When the recreation center opened two years ago, Buccicone approached the assistant director of the Office of Recreation, Paul Jacobus, about employment options. Jacobus hired Buccicone as a monitor in the fitness and weight room, and soon heard rave reviews about the student's performance. Jacobus, who took second place in the category of Student Employer of the Year, then created a supervisory role for his star student. Buccicone's responsibilities grew to the point where Jacobus even called his employee "me, when I'm not around."

Buccicone received a $500 savings bond and a citation from Gov. Robert Ehrlich, R-Md. Now he moves on to compete for the Maryland Student Employee of the Year title

Buccicone is the son of Clifford and Jenny Buccicone of Rochester, Minn. He graduated from Lourdes High School in Rochester, Minn. Digital color photos of Buccicone are available by contacting Amy Cowles at 443-287-9960 or amycowles@jhu.edu.
