JHU Robotics Researcher to Receive National
Mechanical Engineering Award

Gregory S. Chirikjian, a Johns Hopkins University faculty member who has developed innovative robots for medical and industrial applications, will receive the 1996 Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal award at an international conference in November.

Pi Tau Sigma is the national mechanical engineering honor society. In cooperation with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Pi Tau Sigma awards the Gold Medal each year for outstanding achievement in mechanical engineering within 10 years of receiving an undergraduate degree.

Formal presentation of the award will take place during the ASME's International Mechanical Engineering Congress in Atlanta.

Chirikjian, an assistant professor at JHU's Whiting School of Engineering, has designed and constructed a snakelike robot arm that can configure itself into thousands of positions. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Hopkins, both in 1988, then obtained a doctorate in applied mechanics at the California Institute of Technology in 1992.
