Maine Workshop

Rich Stolarski

After the Rocky Mountain National Park weekend workshop I talked to Rich McPeters about doing another workshop with Andy Cook. We decided on his Maine Coast workshop in October of 2013. We drove from Maryland to southern Maine where we began by photographing the iconic Nubble light house. The weather was overcast and spitting rain. The next morning we got a little break with the rain letting up occasionally. We found it difficult to set up in the weather and figure out the right shot.ccasionally. We headed north to Portland with a stop in Perkins Cove. I photographed some boats in the calmness of Perkins Cove. In Portland we headed out toward the Portland Head Lighthouse. It was pouring rain making it particularly difficult to take pictures and keep your equipment dry.

From Portland we headed north and went down the Pemaquid Peninsula to photograph the lighthouse there. It was still kind of drizzly but the next morning arose with bright sunlight that simply made you want to lay down on the gray striated rocks that led up to the lighthouse and take picture.

After Pemaquid we headed to Bar Harbor for the last few days. There we had access to Acadia National Park except that it was closed because of a government shutdown. We could not go up to Cadlllac Mountain for the view so we had to scramble a bit. The road through the middle of the park is public so we had access to Eagle Lake and the iconic Somesville Bridge. We also went back to Eagle Lake at night to try to photograph the Milky Way, with minimal success. A single ranger was working at the Bass Point Lighthouse so we were able to go around behind the lighthouse and down onto the rocks where we sat for 2 hours patiently waiting for sunset while about 50 other photographers gathered behind us to get the shot.

We did hike a mile or so into the park to a small stream. We drove around the perimeter of the park to photograph the rocky coast line and we ventured into Bass Cove where there were many lobster boats and the docks where they brought their catch. In the end we went down to Bar Harbor marina to photograph the schooner docked there.
