Mt. St. Helens in Washington State erupted on May 18, 1980 spewing approximately 0.5 cubic kilometers of material into the atmosphere. At an average temperature of 350 degrees Celsius, and with the material having a heat capacity of 0.25 cal/gm/deg, the event generated heat transfer on a massive scale.
