Classical Ballet Company at JHU

About Us

Founded in 2007, the Classical Ballet Company's mission is to cultivate the performing arts at Hopkins by training members and community members in the classical ballet form.

As a student company, we aim to introduce ballet to the dance community at Hopkins and offer technical classes that can help dancers of any style progress.

JHU Ballet will allow members to begin or further expand on their ballet education. Ballet brings together a diverse group of people and offers a creative and fun way to express yourself through movement.

Classes are the key to beginning or improving in ballet training. Class focuses on improving and refining technique, as well as increasing flexibility and strength. Classes are generally taught by company members.

Classes are open to ALL Hopkins affiliates and take place in the Caplan Dance Studio of the Mattin Center (located on the Homewood Campus). You do not need to be a company member to attend class.

Weekly Schedule

Monday: 7-9pm
Wednesday: 8-9pm
Ballet Bootcamp: Saturday mornings at the rec center

The Nutcracker

Each November, we perform a full-length version of the Nutcracker. An audition class takes place in early September. Choreography is done by students, and rehearsals begin in September after casting decisions have been made. Admission is free and is encouraged by all JHU students, affiliates, faculty, parents, and community members.

Spring Show

In the spring, the ballet company puts on a showcase of both classical and contemporary pieces. Any member of the company is welcome to submit choreography ideas. Auditions and casting are done at the choreographers' discretion. On top of student pieces, an abridged version of a full length ballet is chosen to showcase the company as a whole. Past ballets have included Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Coppélia, and Paquita.

Teaching Information

Students have the opportunity to teach company classes. Contact us if you are interested or would like more information. A couple times per year we will have classes taught by visiting faculty from Peabody or others schools and ballet companies in the Maryland/Washington, D.C. area. Information about these classes will be communicated through email and social media posts.

Every member of the ballet company has the opportunity to perform, regardless of skill level. Students must be in good standing to perform with the company. Participation is entirely optional but is encouraged as it is a great experience and allows students to showcase talent and hard work. There are opportunities to perform for every level of dancer, from beginners to those who have been dancing for most of their lives. Rehearsals take place on Sundays during the fall and spring, with the exception of added tech and dress rehearsals closer to performance dates. Performance opportunities include O-Show, our annual production of the Nutcracker, and the spring showcase.
