Error Correcting Codes:
Information conveyed by any mode of communications (wireless, fiber, cable) is
at the risk of being corrupted by noise and interference in the channel. In the
simplest case, what is dispatched as a binary ONE may be received as a binary
ZERO and vice versa. The same is true of data moving at very high speeds
through computing centers. In such cases, encoding algorithms are used to
append redundant data to the information. Decoding algorithms use this
redundancy to extract error-free information. Error correcting codes were
imagined by Claude Shannon 75 years ago, but, as requirements for
ultra-reliable, high-speed, low-latency communications continue to tighten,
research continues to find better coding systems to meet these needs.
Related interests:
machine learning methods in coding and communications, wireless communication,
optical communication, physical layer security.
Student opportunities
Currently, one or more students are needed to explore these
problems:
1. the use
of machine learning (ML) to design error correcting coding systems for various
noisy wireless communications channels;
2. estimating
the performance penalty paid by a certain class of decoders when their
knowledge of channel noise parameters is inaccurate.
Some projects may produce content suitable for an MSE
thesis, and most can be done for Independent Study, but no formal arrangements
are needed to work in my group. Interested students should send a resume and a
list of science, engineering, and math courses to abcooper@jhu.edu.
