Green StatementJohns Hopkins University is committed to becoming a showpiece of environmental leadership by demonstrating smart, sensible, and creative actions that promote the vision of sustainability. The University's commitment to sustainability extends to all aspects of campus life –including events and event planning.
As one of the largest events held at Hopkins, Commencement attracts thousands of people to campus each year. The University Events Office, the Office of Sustainability, Building and Grounds Maintenance work to integrate sustainable practices into the planning process.
Sustainable Commencement practices include: minimizing print materials, selling and renting out caps and gowns made from 100% recycled materials, using stage decor that can be reused every year, using local caterers who specialize in green practices, publishing information on the web, recycling all bottles and cans, composting food scraps, switching from disposable to compostable service ware—and having these items, along with food scraps, collected for composting.
