The International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation organized an online event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the publication of Shapiro and Teukolsky’s Black Holes, White Dwarfs and Neutron Stars: The Physics of Compact Objects. The meeting was on March 5.

I gave a brief introduction . Then Stuart Shapiro and Saul Teukolsky gave a presentation with the following abstract:

It has been 40+ years since the publication of the textbook, “Black Holes, White Dwarfs and Neutron Stars: The Physics of Compact Objects”, by Stuart L. Shapiro and Saul A. Teukolsky. To celebrate this anniversary, the authors have been invited to share their memories surrounding the creation of this book. Both Stu and Saul will reminisce about why and for whom they wrote the book, the mechanics of drafting the book in the pre-Tex/Latex era, some of the choices they made regarding topics and level of presentation, and some of the feedback they got from colleagues, both on reading early drafts and after the book came out.

Here you can download the slides by Shapiro and Teukolsky.

The talk was followed by a discussion / Q&A session.

It was recorded and it’s available on YouTube.
