HOPKINS IN EGYPT TODAY

JANUARY 2005

The Supreme Council of Antiquities supervises all fieldwork research in Egypt and also monitors and preserves the ancient monuments. Dr. Zahi Hawass, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council, directs and helps to guide the mission of the organization. We are honored to work with the Supreme Council. This web site is an educational one that aims to provide the viewer with the elements of archaeological work that include the progress of excavation. The daily results are crucial to an understanding of how field investigation takes place, since decisions must be made on the basis of ongoing work. The people involved in the work are also an essential feature and contribute profoundly to the final outcomes. It is to those participants in the excavation that this web site is dedicated.

In January 2005, Hopkins' work in Egypt will resume at the Temple of Mut, but this year will be a departure from the format of 2001-2004. Our calendar website this year will follow the work of at least four different Hopkins projects in Egypt, all in progress during the winter. Next year we will have our usual large scale work at the Mut Temple.

First to be seen will be Jackie Williamson, on a Fulbright grant. She will be doing research at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and the site will cover some of her study there.

Next the website will cover work at the Mut enclosure behind the Sacred Lake, where Elaine Sullivan will be excavating to study residential aspects of Thebes in the New Kingdom. That work will be shown from mid-January to mid-February. This year the Brooklyn Museum of Art expedition, under the direction of Richard Fazzini, will be working in the front courts of the precinct at the same time as JHU is present.

Also in Luxor during this period will be Yasmin El Shazly who is studying some tombs at Deir el Medina as part of her investigation into the supernatural powers the Egyptians believed their deceased friends and family possessed. The website will accompany Yasmin in her fieldwork.

Finally, Dr. Betsy Bryan will be doing final research in eleven Theban tombs as she prepares the publication of the tomb of Suemniwet, where Hopkins worked from 1993-2001. The website will follow this study, along with work at the Mut precinct, from late January to mid February.

As always, the Johns Hopkins University thanks the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities and, in particular, its Secretary General, Dr. Zahi Hawass, for their ongoing support of our archaeological work in Egypt.

We expect to begin on or about January 16 and postings will continue until approximately February 8.
