State-of-the Art Library Network Introduced at APL By Linda Dorsey The R.E. Gibson Library and Information Center in the Applied Physics Laboratory will hold a three-day open house Tuesday, Sept. 20, through Thursday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. A state-of-the-art information system--Scientific and Technical Information Library Automated System, or STILAS-- and laboratory-wide networked CD-ROMS will be introduced. "Total Access: The Library at Your Desktop" is the theme for the open house. The event will feature library services displays including STILAS, electronic document delivery services, locally networked CD-ROMS, other Hopkins library resources and Internet resources. Library staff and selected information service vendors will give demonstrations and answer questions. The STILAS currently integrates the on-line catalog and circulation operations. In the future, the integrated system will include serials control, acquisitions and the ability to search other STILAS and library databases using the same search commands. Customers will have the ability to place holds on books, order articles or books, request an interlibrary loan and ask reference questions. The library staff will also be able to communicate with customers via the laboratory-wide e-mail system.
