The third annual Johns Hopkins Social Policy Seminar Series begins Tuesday, March 2, with C. Eugene Steurle, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute in Washington, giving a talk on "The Government We Deserve: Responsive Democracy and Changing Expectations." The talk will be from 4 to 6 p.m. in the conference room on the fifth floor of the Wyman Building, Homewood. Other speakers in the series will be Cathy Born, research associate and professor at the University of Maryland, on "Life After Welfare," March 9; Lisbeth Schorr, lecturer at Harvard University and author, on "More Effective Social Programs and Social Policy: Building a Pragmatic Knowledge Base," April 20; and Joseph Newhouse, professor at Harvard Medical School, on "The Future of Medicare," April 22. The series is cosponsored by the Institute for Policy Studies, the Economics Department at the Krieger School and the Department of Health Policy and Management at the School of Public Health. Kwelismith--an author, poet, actress, vocalist, dancer and educator--will be the featured artist at an upcoming event sponsored by the Black Faculty and Staff Association. She will read from her newest book, Secret Meeting, Kwanzaa Songs and City Sounds, in a performance accompanied by piano, brass and drums on Wednesday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m. in Arellano Theater on the Homewood campus.
