Frederick J. Bindeman Jr., for 14 years a lieutenant with the Security Department at Homewood, died March 8 from lung cancer. He was 59.

A familiar face to the Homewood community, Bindeman for the last 10 years served as the lieutenant in charge of the 3 to 11 p.m. shift, during which he was responsible for 18 people and supervised their security services both on and off campus.

"He was a real people person. He really enjoyed working with and providing services to faculty, students and staff," said Ronald J. Mullen, director of Security. "He always came to work in a good mood, and he had a real can-do attitude. Most people will remember Fred for his helpfulness and his winning smile."

A former member of the Baltimore Police Department, Bindeman came to Hopkins in February 1985 and rarely took a sick day. Even after his cancer was diagnosed in October, he continued in his position while being treated. His last day of work was Jan. 19.

In addition to his campus responsibilities, Bindeman participated with the Greater Homewood Committee and the Charles Village Benefits District in their security efforts.

Interment was March 12 at Lakeview Memorial Park in Sykesville, Md.
