Barclay Knapp Deanship of Arts and Sciences Is Dedicated

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Faculty, students, alumni and friends of Johns Hopkins University joined together in Bloomberg Auditorium on Monday, March 27, to dedicate the James Barclay Knapp Deanship of the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

J. Barclay Knapp Jr., a 1979 graduate of Johns Hopkins and a trustee of the university, has donated $10 million to endow a deanship named in honor of his late father, a prominent and highly decorated general who served for 33 years in the U.S. Army and, after it was established, the U.S. Air Force.

Money earned from the endowment has already gone to work funding the Woodrow Wilson Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program, a program that provides funds and support for undergraduate research.

One of the first Woodrow Wilson fellows, Priscilla Jesunathadas, spoke at the event. Describing the prenatal care video she plans to make for women in India, she said, "I know that people tell me that one person cannot change the world, but I know that this grant has given me the opportunity to make a difference. On behalf of all the Woodrow Wilson grant recipients, I would like to thank you, Mr. Knapp, for your generosity and your commitment to leadership."

President William R. Brody and Barclay Knapp's widow, Mary Emma Knapp

Michael Bloomberg, chair of the board of trustees; William R. Brody, president of Johns Hopkins; Richard McCarty, the James Barclay Knapp dean; Steven Knapp, provost; and F. Whitten Peters, secretary of the Air Force, made remarks on the deanship and the man it honors, James Barclay Knapp.

The event was video taped and can be viewed in RealVideo format at: www.jhu.edu/news_info/news/home00/mar00/knapp.html.
