Research building on fast
track
Under a large white tent on a sweltering June day, ground was
broken for construction on the East Baltimore campus of a
10-story, $140 million research building that's a
concrete-and-brick metaphor for today's biomedical science.
The building, housing the McKusick-Nathans
Institute for Genetic Medicine, other School of Medicine
laboratories and a state-of-the-art mouse facility, becomes part
of a recent approximately $324 million investment in research
infrastructure on the medical campus. It's slated to open early
in 2004.
The building's early stages, including design
approval, have moved with unprecedented speed, reflecting
Hopkins' determination to respond quickly as the scientific
spotlight shifts to new areas of medical research and the NIH
doubles its research budget.

Former Blue Jay named coach of men's lacrosse
team
Dave Pietramala, a 1990 Johns Hopkins graduate and for the last
three years the head men's lacrosse coach at Cornell, has been
named the head coach of the men's lacrosse team at Hopkins. The
announcement was made June 12 by Tom Calder, director of
athletics.
Pietramala, who becomes the 22nd coach in the
117-year history (112 seasons) of the Hopkins lacrosse program,
takes over for John Haus, who resigned the previous week after
two years.
"When the position became available, we
immediately set our sights on Dave and could not be happier that
he wants to return to Homewood," Calder said. "We are looking
forward to him getting started and moving the program forward."
