The university libraries' licensed electronic resources can now be accessed by the Hopkins community via the Internet or other remote access capabilities. The new service, dubbed RAUL for Remote Access to University Libraries, enables currently affiliated faculty, students and staff access to licensed e-resources via any Internet service provider.

RAUL is the first phase of a broadly based directory services initiative that ultimately will be used to authenticate members of the Hopkins community to a variety of restricted resources, such as student registration, human resources information and financial records.

Developed by the university libraries and HITS' Enterprise Services, RAUL provides an alternative to JHUConnect and other campus dial access methods used to authenticate valid JHU library users to the libraries' Internet-based resources. While the JHUConnect service and Welch modem pools will continue to be available until the summer of 2001, the RAUL service now allows valid users to access the libraries' e-resources via their ISP of choice. The RAUL service will not affect users who are accessing library e-resources from computers connected directly to the university network.

RAUL was piloted this spring in collaboration with the university libraries, students at SPSBE and SAIS and medical school faculty in Singapore.
