![]() October 28, 2000 Gardening gloves and painter's hats were the work wear of choice on Saturday, Oct. 28, when 10 Hopkins employees participated in a community service project organized by the Corporate Volunteer Council of Central Maryland in partnership with Volunteer Central. The one-day endeavor--to provide a facelift for the Lillie M. Jackson Elementary School, which offers education and life skills training for 54 special needs children--was part of National Make a Difference Day. Projects included weeding and mulching school grounds and completely transforming the interior with gallons of paint. Once dirty and drab, the rooms now sparkle in a kaleidoscopic mix of off-white, blue, yellow, green and apricot. The Hopkins participation was organized as a 125 Ways of Caring activity, the yearlong volunteer program that is part of the university's 125th anniversary celebration.
