The university issued the following statement on March 16 in response to a query from The Baltimore Sun:
Recently, Johns Hopkins University has been approached by parties interested in either acquiring WJHU-FM or partnering with the university in the operation of the station.
Johns Hopkins has decided it must consider whether another entity, with an organizational mission more directly focused on broadcasting, could more effectively operate WJHU at a time when all broadcasters--especially public broadcasters--face important competitive and technological challenges.
The university has begun a process to allow these interested parties, and any others who come forward, the opportunity to provide more detailed proposals. Those proposals will be examined over the course of the next few weeks or months.
WJHU provides a valuable and important service to the community, built and strengthened over 15 years by a partnership of the university, the station's dedicated staff and its listener-members, underwriters and other supporters. Johns Hopkins' intention is to ensure that the station remains a vital community resource for Baltimore and Maryland.
