With an inaugural lecture by a world-renowned scholar of Judaism and a reception for faculty, administrators, special guests and the public, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences will celebrate its new Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Jewish Studies Program. The event will take place at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Schafler Auditorium of the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy, Homewood campus. Launched with a $5 million gift from the Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Charitable Foundation of Baltimore, the interdisciplinary program will offer new courses, fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students, public lectures, enhanced library resources and visiting scholars in the field of Jewish studies and related disciplines. "Servants of Kings and Not Servants of Servants: Some Aspects of the Political History of the Jews" is the title of the lecture that will be given by Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi, the Salo Wittmayer Baron Professor of Jewish History, Culture and Society at Columbia University. Yerushalmi is director of the Center for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia and a highly distinguished scholar of Spanish and Portuguese Jewry, modern German Jewry and the history of psychoanalysis and Jewish historiography. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy for Jewish Research, Yerushalmi has been honored by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture for his achievements in history, and his book Zakhor: Jewish History and Jewish Memory won the National Jewish Book Award for history in 1983.
