Fall Softball League Forming

JHU staff, faculty, students and alumni are wanted to form teams for a new Baltimore City softball league. Games will be played on Druid Hill Park fields from September to November. For more information, contact Greg Rienzi at [email protected].

 

Interpreters Needed

Johns Hopkins International Society is looking for fluent Spanish and Korean interpreters for several ad hoc contract positions. Interpreters will provide services to both domestic and international patients. Knowledge of medical terminology is a plus. Join the JHMI Choral Society

The JHMI Choral Society is a non-auditioned choir based at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Membership is comprised of JHMI students, former students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the community.

The society meets Wednesday evenings, 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. in the East Wing Auditorium at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. The first meeting will take place Sept. 17.

15 Minutes to Keep Your Legs for Life

The JHH Cardiovascular Diagnostic Lab is teaming with JHHS Office of Community Health to offer free screenings for peripheral vascular disease at the annual "Legs for Life" event, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in room 2140 of the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center. No appointment is necessary.

The painless, non-invasive test, which takes just 15 minutes, can detect PVD, a narrowing in the arteries of the legs that can lead to foot ulceration, infections, pain and possible amputation if left untreated. For more information, call 410-614-2227.

 

Host Family Program

Designed to welcome incoming students to the Baltimore community, this program pairs a host family with a student and provides opportunities for them to develop meaningful friendships. Participation is voluntary. The level of participation is up to the host and the student.

The program, which depends on alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Johns Hopkins, is managed by the Office of Alumni Relations and the Baltimore Alumni Chapter's Host Family Committee.

Volunteer Tutors Wanted

The Greater Homewood Literacy Program offers opportunities to tutor adults in reading and writing in a convenient location. Materials and training are provided, and hours are flexible to suit all schedules. For details, call 410-261-3524.

 

Johns Hopkins Ballroom Dance Club

The Johns Hopkins Ballroom Dance Club will offer a weekly salsa and merengue dance class (beginner to intermediate level) with a professional instructor on Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for six weeks beginning Sept. 8 in Levering Hall on the Homewood campus. Bioinformatics and Genomics Course

A mini-course on bioinformatics and genomics is being offered to all incoming graduate students in the School of Medicine; the lectures are open to the entire Johns Hopkins community.

The course is recommended for students new to these subjects who would like to familiarize themselves with basic concepts. Graduate students must register with the School of Medicine registrar. Postdocs, staff and faculty do not need to register. There are no exams or grades given.

The course takes place from 3 to 4 p.m., on Sept. 2, 3, 4 and 5, in Mountcastle Auditorium, Preclinical Teaching Building. The course is followed by a computer lab from 4:10 to 5:30 p.m. The lab is limited to 100, with first priority given to incoming graduate students in the School of Medicine.

 

Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Request for Applications

The Johns Hopkins Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is offering pilot funds for developmental and feasibility studies in the clinical and basic sciences. The funds are to be used to investigate the use of complementary and alternative medical therapies for primary or adjuvant use in cancer or cancer-related conditions.

Awards of $20,000 to $50,000 will be given per project per year, depending on the scope of the proposed projects. The deadline for proposals is Sept. 15. Certificate in Nonprofit Studies

The Institute for Policy Studies is accepting applications for its fall classes in the Certificate in Nonprofit Studies Program. This part-time program is designed to develop the knowledge and practical skills needed by nonprofit staff and volunteers to run a successful organization. The certificate can be applied to a Hopkins MBA.
