Saluting St. Petersburg
The spotlight will shine on some of the university's
Russian ties as various Johns Hopkins divisions and
cultural institutions participate in the Vivat! St.
Petersburg Arts Celebration, an upcoming city-wide event
that is expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors to
Baltimore. Starting this week, the university will host a
number of cultural and educational offerings to coincide
with the unprecedented event, including musical
performances, film screenings, personal enrichment courses
and library and museum exhibits.

Julie Freischlag of UCLA is named chief
of surgery
Julie A. Freischlag, a California vascular surgeon, will be
the new William Stewart Halsted Professor and director of
the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine and
surgeon in chief of the hospital, effective March 1. She is
the first woman and only the sixth person to serve in these
posts in the school's 110-year history.
Freischlag, 48, has been professor and
chief of vascular surgery and director of the Gonda
Vascular Center at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine
since 1998. A prolific researcher who has published more
than 100 original articles and 27 book chapters, most on
the surgical repair of the carotid artery and abdominal
aortic aneurysms, she also has received outstanding teacher
awards at every institution where she has served as a
faculty member.
