Jewish Volunteers Needed
Ash-kenazi Jewish individuals going to the Phipps Clinic
for a flu shot are asked to take a moment to contribute to
an important scientific endeavor.
At a booth near the flu shot tables, Jews ages 40 or
older whose ancestors emigrated from eastern Europe can
contribute DNA samples for the use of investigators
conducting studies on the genetic underpinnings of several
complex diseases. Participation is anonymous, and advance
registration is not required. Hours of operation are 10
a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, Oct. 27 to 31,
Phipps Building, third floor, East Baltimore campus.

Adopt-a-Family and Adopt-an-Agency
Programs
The Office
of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs sponsors a
program to provide families and individuals with gifts,
clothing and food that they might not otherwise receive or
be able to afford. Families that need to be adopted are
identified by the Baltimore City Department of Social
Services.
Several local nonprofit health and human welfare
agencies may also be adopted. Among the agencies are
shelters for women and children who have been abused,
shelters for people who are homeless, residential programs
for people combating drug addiction and residences for
people with severe disabilities.
Departments, groups or individuals interested in
participating in the program for the holidays can complete
adoption requests online at
www.jhu.edu/~outreach (click on Adopt-a-Family/Agency).
For more information, contact Matt Smith at
mattsmith@jhu.edu or 410-516-0345.

Spring Seminar at Villa Spelman
Graduate students may apply now to participate in the
spring semester Seminar in Italian Studies at the
Singleton Center for Italian Studies
at the Villa Spelman in Florence.
Nancy Struever, professor emerita in the
Humanities
Center, will convene the seminar, which is open to
students from all departments in the humanities and the
social sciences who can demonstrate a need to spend a
period of residence in Italy for successful completion of
the Ph.D. They should also have completed all requirements
except for the dissertation by January, when they arrive in
Florence; students are expected to remain at the villa
until the end of June. Several students will receive a
Singleton fellowship and travel allowance, but tuition is
not covered by Villa Spelman. Other students may receive
fellowship and travel support from their home
departments.
Eligible students should submit applications to Mary
McDonough in the Villa Spelman Office, 407 Gilman Hall, by
Friday, Nov. 7. The application should contain three
pieces: a one-page statement from the student describing
the subject of his or her research; a brief letter of
recommendation from the student's supervisor testifying to
the completion, or plans for completion, of other
requirements; and a letter from the chair of the student's
department, stating that the student has the permission of
the chair to attend the seminar, and specifying whether the
department will provide fellowship and travel support.
Successful applicants will be notified as soon as
possible.
Mary McDonough may be reached at
mmcdonough@jhu.edu.
