A Message to JHU Cell Phone Users from Johns Hopkins IT Services

During the past several weeks, you may have seen news reports about a proposed wireless 411 directory service. Such a directory service would list wireless phone numbers, similar to the landline 411 directory service.

This will open the doors for telemarketers to call your cellular phone number. Both Verizon Wireless and Cingular have opposed this directory and will not be providing Johns Hopkins' information for it. However, that does not guarantee that your phone number can't be identified through other sources and published.

The Federal Trade Commission has set up a do-not-call list, which is called a cell phone registry. To be included, you must call 888-382-1222 from the number you wish to register or fill out at an online form at http://www.donotcall.gov.
