Entrepreneur Jeong H. Kim to Give Blumenthal Lecture on Yurie Systems

Entrepreneur Jeong H. Kim, a Johns Hopkins graduate who serves on the university's board of trustees, will deliver the Sydney and Mitzi Blumenthal Lecture at 3:30 p.m. today, April 19, in Schafler Auditorium in the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy, Homewood campus.

Kim's talk is titled "The Story of Yurie Systems," referring to the high-tech communications equipment company he founded in 1992. He served as its chairman and CEO until its acquisition by Lucent Technologies in 1998 for $1.1 billion. At Lucent, he served as president of the Optical Networking Group, returning the unit to profitability. Today, Kim serves as a professor at the University of Maryland's Clark School of Engineering and chairs CIBERNET Corp., a wireless technology services company.

At Johns Hopkins, Kim earned bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and computer science in 1982 and a master's degree in technical management in 1989. He holds a doctorate in reliability engineering from the University of Maryland.

The Blumenthal Lecture and Award for Contributions to Management in Technology were established in 1993 by Sydney C. Blumenthal Jr., a 1937 Hopkins graduate, and his wife, Mitzi. Sydney Blumenthal died in 1999.

The award and lecture were created to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to management in technology and to allow these individuals to present their ideas to students in the Whiting School of Engineering and the greater Johns Hopkins community.

Andrew S. Douglas, interim dean of the Whiting School, and Mitzi Blumenthal will provide introductory remarks. After Kim's address, Provost Steven Knapp will present the Blumenthal Award to the speaker. Refreshments will be served afterward.
