HSA Cookbook

To support the university's United Way campaign, Homewood Student Affairs has reissued its cookbook, which includes over 150 recipes submitted by students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents and friends. Recipes for family favorites, timesaving meals and international cuisine, as well as handy ingredient alternatives and student friendly charts, are among the cookbook's features.

All proceeds from the sale of the HSA Cookbook will go to the United Way of Central Maryland. The book may be purchased for $5 at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions reception desk in the lobby of Garland Hall or through an e-mail to Sherryl Fletcher, senior associate director of Admissions, at [email protected].

 

School Supplies for Needy Iraqi Children

During September and October, the Interfaith Center, in conjunction with the many religious groups on the Homewood campus, is organizing a universitywide school supply drive to send supplies to Iraqi children.

The effort was organized by students after Chaplain Sharon Kugler received from alumnus Alexander Kuhns, currently serving as an Arabic interpreter for the U.S. Army in Mosul, an e-mail in which he communicated the dire need of school supplies for the children there as a result of years of economic sanctions.

Senior Tala Altalib, who is coordinating the effort, said that anything in new or good condition, including notebooks, pencils, glue and markers, is needed and would be appreciated.

The drop-off location is the JHU Interfaith Center at 3509 N. Charles St.

 

Nursing Open House

The School of Nursing will host a fall open house on Saturday, Oct. 16, for students interested in undergraduate, master's, postmaster's, doctoral and certificate nursing programs. The open house begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Anne M. Pinkard Building, located at 525 N. Wolfe St.

Academic program seminars will cover traditional undergraduate, accelerated undergraduate, RN to BS undergraduate, the BS to MSN, the Hopkins Business of Nursing certificate program, and graduate and doctoral programs. Representatives from the faculty, admissions, financial aid, student body, U.S. military, U.S. Peace Corps, U.S. Public Health Service and ROTC will be available to answer questions and distribute materials. Also on the agenda are tours of the School of Nursing building.

Statistics Research Funding

The Acheson J. Duncan Fund for the Advancement of Research in Statistics requests proposals for small grants to support research projects in statistics, probability and stochastic processes. The fund was created in 1997 by an endowment established by professor emeritus Acheson Duncan, a pioneer in research and application of quality control and industrial statistics.

Faculty and students throughout Hopkins are eligible to apply for funding for collaborative projects with a member of the faculty in the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department. Items funded might include travel to research conferences and workshops, computer equipment and software, matching funds for grant proposals, short-term visits of collaborators to Hopkins, interdepartmental seminars, partial support for research assistants and seed money for new research. Most grants will be less than $5,000.

Proposals should be brief, preferably no more than three single-sided pages; provide itemized expense estimates; and be signed by each investigator. They may be submitted at any time to committee chair John C. Wierman, Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department, 302 Whitehead Hall.
