Johns Hopkins Teams Are Forming Now for American Cancer Society's Relay for Life

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event, and Johns Hopkins teams are now being formed for the university effort, which will take place April 17-18 on the upper quad of the Homewood campus.

This all-night event serves to honor cancer victims and survivors by giving them hope and support.

The Hopkins event will open with a reception honoring survivors. Then, as night falls, there will be a luminaria ceremony in which each candle honors a survivor or is in memory of a victim. Following that, the survivors will walk a lap around the quad before being joined by their caretakers and then by everyone else.

Participants enter in teams of eight to 15 people and set up camp on the quad for the night. In addition to raising money beforehand (minimum per person is $10, but the Hopkins goal is $100), teams are responsible for having at least one member walking at all times through the night. To underscore that this emotional event is also upbeat, organizers are planning a DJ, free food and live entertainment.
