Cold temps inspire civil engineering student to
LIAKOS ARISTON, foreground, a senior in the
Whiting School of
Engineering, took advantage of last week's subfreezing
temperatures to craft three thin-walled ice structures
outside Homewood's Latrobe Hall, using light cheesecloth
draped over balloons to form shapes that were then misted
with water — and quickly froze. Ariston was inspired
by the thin-shell techniques of Swiss engineer Heinz Isler
and the class Perspectives on the Evolution of Structures,
taught by assistant professors of
Sanjay Arwade and Ben Schafer.
