ESL Summer Intensive

Johns Hopkins is offering a summer intensive course in English as a Second Language. The full program provides more than 25 hours a week of course work, language lab practices and social activities designed to sharpen and refine English speaking, reading, testing and writing skills. The program runs from July 5 through Aug. 6. The registration deadline is June 24.

The full immersion program includes classes in Strengthening Oral Communication, Reading and Writing English, American Culture, TOEFL Prep and English for Medical Professionals.

After hours, students meet for conversation groups and a variety of social and recreational activities, including a crab feast, movie nights and visits to Baltimore attractions.

The tuition for the full immersion program is $2,300. Students unable to attend the full program may select one or two courses for tuition of $795 per course. To register or for more information, call the Language Teaching Center at 410-516-4466 or send e-mail to

Sports Volunteers Needed

The first-year medical school class is launching Johns Hopkins' Sports Clinic for youths in grades three through five (ages 8 to 12) from the area around the East Baltimore campus. The event will be held on Saturdays, May 14, 21 and 28, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (with registration from 8:30 to 9 a.m. on the first day) at 1620 McElderry St., next to the tennis court.

Each day, participants will attend two of eight different stations — basketball, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, softball, tennis, football, soccer and track — and will receive instruction in sportsmanship and teamwork as well as in the activities. At each day's conclusion, lunch will be provided. Registration is being conducted through schools, churches and other local organizations. Johns Hopkins participants are needed.
