Party at the Patapsco

The Patapsco/Back River Tributary Team invites the Hopkins community to a party for the Patapsco at North Point State Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 22.

A cookout and live music, exhibits about the river, a wade-in led by a former state senator to test water clarity, and activities for kids of all ages will entertain partygoers on the beach (bring your canoe) and in the nearby trolley barn. Parking at the park is $3, but everything else — including food — is free. The park is open until dusk.

All proceeds benefit local watershed groups. To support this year's event, write a check to Greater Homewood Community Corp., with "Save the Patapsco, Hon!" in the memo section. DLC Nominations

The Diversity Leadership Council is seeking new faculty, staff and students to serve on the council, which advises senior leadership on diversity issues in both the university and health system.

Meetings are once a month. Membership, which is for one or two years with a time commitment of four to six hours per month, requires dedication to inclusion and the ability to communicate across and about differences.

Nominations, including a short biography and brief description of the candidate's reasons for wishing to serve on the council, should be forwarded to [email protected] or Attn: DLC Nominations, 130 Garland Hall, on the Homewood campus. Self-nominations are encouraged from all levels of the university and health system. The deadline for receiving nominations is Friday, May 20.

Certificate in Nonprofit Studies

The Institute for Policy Studies is accepting applications and course registrations for its summer classes in the Certificate in Nonprofit Studies Program. Two courses are offered: Program Development and Resolving Differences Constructively, which will meet on the Baltimore, Homewood and Washington campuses.

This part-time program is designed to develop and enhance the knowledge and practical skills needed by nonprofit staff and volunteers to run successful organizations. The certificate courses may be applied toward a nonprofit concentration in the Hopkins MBA and/or MS/ODSHR degrees. Classes begin in June.

Grant Writing Workshop

The Professional Development Office at JHMI is sponsoring an intensive workshop on grant writing to assist new faculty, clinical fellows and postdocs with writing an NIH or other peer-reviewed grant application. Cost is $1,100, payable with tuition remission.

The workshop consists of a full-day didactic session on Monday, July 25, which all participants attend, followed by a small discussion session on one of four dates: Aug. 24, Aug. 25, Sept. 8 or Sept. 9.

The didactic session focuses on how to write a competitive NIH Research Plan (Abstract and Specific Aims, Background and Significance, Preliminary Studies and Research Design and Methods). Participants use examples from funded as well as unsuccessful grant applications to learn the criteria that reviewers use to evaluate applications. In addition, this session covers criteria of a "fundable" research problem; the NIH system of peer review; and sources of funding for new investigators, focusing on the "K" awards as well as the NIH R03 and R21 grant applications.

The second part of the workshop consists of small discussion sessions, during which participants carry out mock reviews of two critical components of a grant: the abstract and specific aims. Five days prior to their discussion session, participants submit a draft of their abstract and specific aims. In addition to having a mock review of their abstract and specific aims, participants receive feedback from the course director, W. Sanders.
