Blood Inventories Need Replenishing
The devastating disaster in the Gulf Coast and the ongoing
relief work serve as grim reminders of the need for local
preparedness on many fronts. On Wednesday and Thursday,
Sept. 21 and 22, the American Red Cross will be holding a
blood drive from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion
on the Homewood campus.
The Red Cross relies heavily on fall drives to
replenish inventories depleted over the summer months. When
supplies run low, hospitals and treatment centers in the
Greater Chesapeake and Potomac region must import blood
from other areas, whose own reserves might be limited.
Keeping an ample supply of blood in this region helps all
around.
Blood donated is used, for example, to treat community
residents who are victims of accident and trauma, women and
their premature infants and patients undergoing cancer
treatment.
An appointment can be scheduled online at
webapps.jhu.edu/blooddrive or by calling 410-516-0138.
Volunteers are needed on site as well.
