Evergreen House Celebrates Art, Wine, Food of Italy

By Heather Egan
Historic Houses

Lovers of art, wine and food are invited to enjoy an evening of regional Italian wine and cuisine while raising money for Evergreen House's artist-in-residence programs. ArtUncorked, co-hosted and sponsored by the Wine Source, will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, in Evergreen's Carriage House. Reservations are limited. Admission is $60 for members, $65 for others. For information or to make reservations, call 410-516-0341 or go to

The theme of the evening, Viva Italia! Red, White & Evergreen, salutes Evergreen's former owners, John Work Garrett, who was U.S. ambassador to Italy from 1929 to 1933, and his wife, the stylish arts patron and cultural maverick Alice Warder Garrett, who brought European flare to Baltimore's social scene with her glamorous and flamboyant parties.

Guests will learn about more than a dozen of Italy's most famous wine regions and sample more than 60 wines, from Sangiovese to Trebbiano and the wide viticultural variations that lie in between. Traditional and innovative dishes inspired by ingredients typical of each Italian region will be served by some of Baltimore's top restaurants, among them Abacrombie, Dogwood Deli, Gertrude's, Iggies, Ixia and the Oceanaire Seafood Room.

Also planned are musical entertainment and live and silent auctions at which guests can bid on contemporary art, vacation getaways, private wine-tasting dinners and collectible wines.

Evergreen's artist-in-residence programs allow emerging and mature artists to live, think and create within the extraordinary environment of Evergreen House and its rich historic collections and gardens. The museum then connects these artists with the public through contemporary exhibitions, such as the biennial Sculpture at Evergreen exhibition, on view this year through Oct. 15, and creative community and school collaborations.

Support for artUncorked is provided by the Wine Source, B. Creative Group, Courtesy Parking, Mount Royal Printing, the Urbanite and WYPR-FM.
