Five visiting nursing students from the American
University in Beirut have received an extended welcome from
the JHU School of
Nursing and the JHH Department of
Nursing.
AUB master of nursing science students Sarah Abboud,
Suha Ballout, Rida Gharzeddine, Grace Khatcherian and
Rafika Zaatari recently completed a seven-week clinical
nursing residency at Johns Hopkins and were unable to
return home at the end of July as airports and ports in
war-torn Lebanon were closed.
Arrangements were made to extend and cover the costs
of temporary housing and living expenses for the five
students, and each was offered a variety of opportunities
during their prolonged stay that will enhance their
clinical experiences, including attendance at
graduate-level nursing courses, participation in rotations
at the hospital and guidance and help on their
dissertations.
Throughout the past year, deans, faculty and students
from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and the American
University in Beirut have worked to lay the foundation for
collaborations beneficial to both schools of nursing.
Johns Hopkins has helped develop plans for an AUB
Center for Community-Based Care, including a community
health assessment, and have explored mechanisms for
assisting AUB faculty in conducting scientific research, an
important step in the formation of doctoral programs for
both medical and nursing students at the school. In
addition, Johns Hopkins had anticipated sending more
nursing students to AUB Medical Center and the School of
Nursing for a variety of learning experiences in a
continuing scholarly exchange program.
Individuals and organizations wishing to help support
the AUB students during their stay in Baltimore may send
contributions to the School of Nursing Development Office
at 525 N. Wolfe St., room 529. Checks should be made
payable to JHUSON and noted "AUB students." For more
information, call 410-955-4284.
