West Heads South to East Room


At a July 27 ceremony in the East Room of the White House, James E. West of the Whiting School of Engineering received the prestigious 2006 National Medal of Technology from President George W. Bush. The co-inventor of the microphone used in most telephones and many other electronic devices worldwide, West spent more than 40 years at Bell Labs and joined Johns Hopkins as a research professor in 2002. He was elected in 1998 to the National Academy of Engineering and in 1999 to the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
