On June 22 and 23, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies hosted its
20th anniversary celebration and reunion at the Nanjing campus.
The celebration culminated in the presentation of an award to former U.S. Secretary of State
Henry Kissinger, who is widely credited with opening diplomatic relations between the United States
and China during his secret trip to Beijing in 1971. Other events included the 2007 graduation
ceremony, keynote address by Kissinger, alumni dinners, panel discussions, concert, gala ball and
dedication of the new 100,000-square-foot Samuel Pollard Building.
Several senior Johns Hopkins officials attended the celebration, including President William R.
Brody, who delivered his address in Mandarin.
The Hopkins-Nanjing Center, which is operated jointly by SAIS and Nanjing University, was one
of the first joint academic ventures between the two countries. Many of its 1,700 alumni have gone on
to play significant roles in United StatesÐChina relations.
Kissinger was presented with the Hopkins-Nanjing Center Award for Outstanding Contributions
to Cultural Understanding Between the United States of America and the People's Republic of China.
