University photographer Jay VanRensselaer, center, and
students Amitabh "Amit" Chandra, Dilveer "DV" Vahali,
Yvonne Gonzales and David Hung cut the ribbon for the
opening of "The Faces of Hopkins," the photographic exhibit
that will line Homewood's Gilman Tunnel through April 23.
The shutterbugs snapped thousands of informal portraits
that were winnowed down to the 550-plus strips — four
per subject — on display. The project grew out of a
portrait demonstration in VanRensselaer's Introduction to
Photography class. "We started talking about this as a
larger project that could put a human face on Hopkins," he
said. "We both wanted to capture the diversity here, and
show the people who make this place what it is." Also
instrumental in the installation was Sunny Sahajwani, not
pictured.
