Maya Angelou to lead MLK tribute
25th annual event will include a remembrance of Coretta Scott King

Maya Angelou has made her mark as poet, historian, author, journalist, actress, playwright, civil rights activist, producer and director.

The featured guest and keynote speaker for Johns Hopkins' 25th annual Martin Luther King Jr. birthday remembrance, an event that takes place this week, will be Maya Angelou. The celebrated poet, playwright and civil rights activist joins an impressive list of past speakers that includes Harry Belafonte Jr., the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, James Earl Jones, Jesse Jackson, Danny Glover, Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King.

University introduces its green team
Hopkins shuttles that run on biodiesel fuels, "green" roofs, the use of recycled storm water and training in the use of organic fertilizers are just some of the practices that will be proposed and championed by the new Johns Hopkins University Sustainability Committee.

Abandonment issues: JHU policy students get handle on Baltimore City's vacant property problem
In 1950, Baltimore was the sixth largest city in America, with a population approaching 1 million. Today, Baltimore is the nation's 18th largest, with a population just over 600,000. The good news for residents and city officials is that the city's decades-long population decline has recently abated; the bad news is that the physical scars of this exodus — boarded-up homes, shuttered commercial buildings and junk-strewn vacant lots — still pockmark the city.
