The cakes — and the students — kept on
coming for two hours on Feb. 22, when the Johns Hopkins
family took a break to celebrate Commemoration Day, the
anniversary of the university's founding in 1876.
Homewood's Levering Hall was all decked out for the
occasion in sable and gold bunting, and scores of faculty,
staff and students turned out in their finest JHU regalia
to honor the spirit of the date, which also marked the
installation of Daniel Coit Gilman, the university's first
president.
