The UMBC graduate school ceremony, held May 22 on the university's Baltimore County campus, gave Johns Hopkins President William R. Brody an opportunity to see a commencement ceremony from a different perspective: Rather than conferring honorary degrees, as he does each year at Johns Hopkins, President Brody was a recipient of an honorary doctor of science degree, receiving a hood and citation from UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski in recognition of his achievements in medicine and engineering and his leadership in higher education.

Giving the commencement address to the 40 doctorate and 180 master's degree recipients, President Brody urged the audience to do well by doing good, and to find meaning in their lives by small acts of everyday kindness. "In some ways the big things we do may or may not have lasting impact," he said. "But the small things that we do are extraordinarily important. ... Always keep your eyes open for those opportunities to give back."
