Beneficiaries of the largesse of Johns Hopkins gather to express their gratitude

Two hundred and twelve years after his birth on a tobacco plantation in southern Maryland, Johns Hopkins — Baltimore businessman, investor (most notably, in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad) and philanthropist — was remembered by those who have benefited from his greatest legacy, the university and hospital that bear his name.

Among those leading the May 18 celebration and wreath-laying at the Johns Hopkins statue on Charles and 33rd streets were Barry Richmond, a member of the executive committee of the Alumni Association's Baltimore chapter; Adam Falk, dean of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences; and Wendy Brody, wife of President William R. Brody.

Giving the address, Richmond said, "On the occasion of your 212th birthday, we thank you and honor you, Johns Hopkins, for your generosity and vision in establishing the university and hospital which have enriched all aspects of our lives, in every area of advanced education and the healing arts."

Following the 4 p.m. ceremony, the attendees gathered at Steinwald Alumni House for wine, cheese and a birthday cake bearing the founder's likeness.
